More than 132 tonnes of locally-grown vegetables were sold in September as part of the “Premium Qatari Vegetables” and “Qatar Farms” programmes.
These two programmers are being implemented by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) and Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI).
The programmes were launched last year in collaboration with major commercial outlets including Carrefour, Lulu Hypermarkets, Al Meera and Family Food Centre.
These programmes aim to improve the local marketing of Qatari vegetables, increase the demand for locally-produced vegetables in the country, reduce production losses to a minimum, increase Qatari farmers’ income to encourage increased investment in agriculture and enhance the availability of the produce in consumer complexes throughout the year.
The MME has adopted the two programmes as part of the country’s efforts to support the Qatari agricultural products by providing local farmers with the opportunity to display their produce in consumer market complexes at affordable prices without intermediaries.
