Hamburg: Three Iraqis went on trial in the northern German city of Hamburg on Monday in connection with the preparation of a serious attack that threatened the state and of illegally handling explosive substances. Two of the accused, both aged 23, face the main charge, and the third, aged 36, is charged with being an accessory.
All three arrived in Germany as refugees. They were arrested in the far north-western state of Schleswig-Holstein in January and have been in custody since. According to the charge sheet, the main two accused carried out trials using black powder taken from fireworks.
They aimed to secure a firearm through the third accused "in order to kill or injure the largest possible number of people not of the Muslim faith.” But the weapon turned out to be too expensive.
The trial is expected to run over another 10 court days up to December 6. (DPA)
