UNDER the theme of ‘Population Policy between Reality & Hope’, the Permanent Population Committee (PPC) marked Qatar Population Day at JW Marriott Hotel on Tuesday.
The PPC observes Qatar Population Day every year in line with the UN World Population Day.
The ceremony was inaugurated by HE Dr Saleh bin Mohammed al Nabit, president of PPC and Planning and Statistics Authority, who welcomed the guests and wished the participants success in achieving the objectives of Qatar Population Day.
Expressing pride in Qatar’s 37th ranking among 189 countries in the Human Development Index (HDI) of the UN Development Program (UNDP) in 2018, Nabit said the population policy needs to be evaluated regularly.
Regarding population and workforce issues, Nabit noted that measures have been taken to achieve demographic balance, promote modernisation to rationalise recruitment of unskilled labour, and to ensure suitable housing for different groups of the workforce.
In the field of education and health, the average number of years of schooling has increased along with life expectancy. Maternal mortality rates have also dropped significantly.
He, however, noted that achieving demographic balance in a short period of time is not possible because of a number of factors.
On behalf of the Minister of Culture and Sports (guest of honour), HE Salah bin Ghanim al Ali, Advisor for Strategic Affairs to the Minister Mohammed al Ansari, called for cooperation between ministries and other institutions and authorities in the State to ensure a successful implementation of the Population Policy programme. He also stressed the need for focusing on development areas and the youth.
Aser Toson, UNFPA resident representative in the GCC Regional Office, stressed the importance of cooperation between the PPC and UNFPA for the formulation of population policy and training of cadres.
The second session titled ‘The Experience of the Republic of Singapore in implementation of Population Policy’ was chaired by Dr Jamal al Yafei, assistant director of Strategic Planning Department at the Planning and Statistics Authority.
Dr Yong, professor of sociology from the National University of Singapore, and Abdullah Mohammed al Hammadi, advisor to the Technical Office of PPC, took part in the session.
The third and final session was devoted to discussing the main features of the second phase results of the population policy implementation follow-up. The session was chaired by Yousef Mubarak al Dosari, expert in the technical committee of PPC.
The celebration also saw honouring of the former members of the PPC in recognition of their efforts towards implementing the Population Policy programme.
