After one win in seven league matches, Umm Salal have all to play for when they take on Qatar Sports Club at the Al Duhail Stadium on Thursday.
Umm Salal, have lost four and drawn two matches this season which leaves them close to the relegation zone with five points, two ahead of Thursday’s opponents who are 11th.
“This game has much importance for us. It’s a new and big challenge for my team in the league. We have only one win to our credit, like Qatar SC, and the victory will give us a great motivation to achieve positive results in the coming weeks,” Umm Salal coach Raul Caneda told reporters on Wednesday.
The Orange Fortress have only managed two wins from their last 10 league matches dating from last season, but Caneda believes his team’s fortunes will chanbe soon.
“Our team has great potential, but the biggest problem is the results. However, over a period of time, I am sure the situation will improve,” the Spaniard said.
For Qatar SC, an end to their constant flirtation with relegation will surely be the target for the club which once had Samuel Eto’o on its books. The Kings finished last season in the relegation playoff position but pulled off a 1-0 win over Second Division runners-up Muaither to ensure their stay in the 2019-20 season.
With just one win in seven this term, a change in fortunes is needed for a team which managed just four league win all last season -- the least number by any of the 12 teams.
“The game against Umm Salal will not be easy. We are very eager to win having lost many points in the recent games. Umm Salal will also be looking to make up for their lapses. We have put our last result behind us. We have to think about the upcoming Umm Salal match, in order to get a positive result that will help us a lot,” said Wesam Rizik who replaced Spaniard Carlos Ferrer as coach early this month.
“Mistakes are part of football, but the most important thing is to learn from them. Umm Salal players are known for their speed and fighting spirit, so sometimes the coach is forced to choose a defensive plan and sometimes this plan may be unsuccessful especially if there are individual mistakes,” the former Qatar midfielder said.
In the early kickoff on Thursday, eighth-placed Al Wakrah will host Al Khor at the Al Wakrah Stadium.
