Qatar has reiterated its commitment to uphold the Charter of the United Nations (UN) and international law, and reaffirmed its support for the role of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the peaceful settlement of disputes.
Qatar also affirmed its keenness to respect the decisions of the ICJ as the highest international judicial organ of the UN.
This came in a statement delivered by Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations HE Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al Thani during the 74th session of the UN General Assembly on the Report of the International Court of Justice on Wednesday.
The Qatari ambassador said despite the pressures and violations since the imposition of the illegal blockade and unilateral coercive measures under false pretexts for more than two years, Qatar preferred to resort to the ICJ as the principal judicial organ of the UN to protect the rights of Qatari citizens and residents affected by the measures taken by the UAE on June 5, 2017, which is a violation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
She also pointed out that the world has witnessed the integrity of Qatar’s approach to dealing with the crisis in accordance with international law and within the framework of international mechanisms for conflict resolution.
She added that Qatar’s prudent legal position is clearly confirmed by the July 2018 Order of the ICJ, which takes temporary measures against the UAE for violating the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, as well as the ICJ’s decision in June 2019, which rejected the UAE’s request for interim measures against Qatar.
Qatar’s participation in the discussions of the General Assembly came on the occasion of the issuance of the annual report of the ICJ, which included the package of its decisions which includes the Court’s Order to take temporary measures against the UAE and its decision to reject the UAE’s request for provisional measures against Qatar.
Sheikha Alya stressed the importance of ICJ receiving unlimited support from the international community.
