Big action will hit the shooting ranges at the Losail Shooting Range with Qatar hosting the 14th Asian Shooting Championships – which also serves as a Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualification meet – from November 4 to 14.
A total of thirty-eight Olympic quota places will be up for grabs in the continental tournament in Qatar organised by Qatar Shooting and Archery Association (QSSA).
The top three finishers in each of the shotgun, rifle and pistol events of the tournament will gain quota places or outright qualification to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Qatar’s challenge will revolve around skeet shooters Rashid Saleh al Athba and seasoned campaigner and Olympic medalist Nasser Saleh al Attiyah, who is aiming to qualify for a record 7th Olympics.
In the Skeet team event, Qatar’s Rashid Saleh al Athba, Masoud Saleh al Athba and Abdulaziz Sahel al Attiyah will be looking forward to put up a good show at home.
In the men’s Double Trap event, Hamad al Akhan al Marri, who won gold in September at the 9th Asian Shotgun Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, will aim for an encore.
Another trap shooter Mohammed Ahmed al Rumaihi, who received a shot in the arm with his bronze medal at Austria Open in August at Vienna meet, will be keen to prove a point or two at the Asian event.
Besides the men’s shooters a number of women competitors will also be aiming to pull off a few surprises and lay grab on the Olympic quota places up for grabs at the 10-day event.
Meanwhile, India has named a 41-member strong squad which will be looking to secure the maximum possible Olympic quotas in the championship.
A notable selection has been of seasoned rifle shooter Sanjeev Rajput in the MQS section of the men’s 10m Air Rifle event.
This has been done to ensure that in a situation the second quota in the event is not earned, Sanjeev can be kept for the event for Tokyo. Divyansh Panwar has earned one quota for India in the 10m Air rifle out of a maximum possible two till now.
There are also some new faces who will be seen for the first time in senior India colours in the Olympic events. Among them, Shravan Kumar (in men’s 10m Air Pistol) will join the duo of Abhishek Verma and Saurabh Chaudhary.
Also, in the men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, where there are four quotas to be won in Qatar, Bhavesh Shekhawat will partner the likes of Anish Bhanwala and Adarsh Singh.
