University of Aberdeen celebrated the graduation of its Class of 2019 on Monday, where 71 students received their degrees in front of a proud audience of family, friends, faculty members and alumni.
Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani, Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Dr Mohammed Abdul Wahed Ali al Hammadi, and Principal and Vice Chancellor of the university Prof George Boyne attended the ceremony.
Sheikha Aisha bint Faleh al Thani, founder and chairperson of Al Faleh Group for Educational and Academic Services, received an honorary degree at the event, which welcomed the first graduands to receive degrees in Qatar from the more than 500-year old university.
Speaking on the occasion, Sheikha Aisha acknowledged the two women who inspired her: her mother and Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.
She said, “Accepting this award, I would like to mention the two women who inspired me and whom I have worked alongside. At a time when women’s voices went unheard, my mother refused to be confined by societal norms and chose to become one of the first business women in Qatar. When some men shied away from big investment opportunities, she took calculated risks and ventured into big real estate projects. She wore many hats; she was an entrepreneur, a caring mother and a business woman. The other woman I owe a lot is Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. If it was not for Her Highness, we Qatari women would be less heard and unable to contribute fully to the advancement of our country.”
She also urged the new graduates to uphold the principles of their alma mater and be advocates for change.
In an official statement, Professor Boyne stressed the milestones of the University that has been providing the world with excellence and innovation since 1495.
Addressing the grdauates, he said, “Today you join our alumni family which has members on every corner of the world; the sense of belonging extends beyond graduation. Regardless of what path you choose, we work to ensure you feel connected to one another wherever you go in the future. Higher education transforms lives and our alumni stay connected because of the wonderful and memorable education they have received through the University of Aberdeen. I sincerely hope this will be true for you all too.”
