QATAR Red Crescent Society (QRCS), in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education’s Training and Educational Development Center, has held a disaster management training workshop for 40 headmistresses of public schools in Qatar.
Under the umbrella of the QRCS School Program, the two-day event covers a wide range of topics related to disaster management and risk reduction, including introduction to disaster management, risk analysis, field assessment and coordination, socio-psychological support, nutrition and food security, health in emergency, water and sanitation and shelter.
The sessions are conducted by a group of QRCS’ disaster management specialists and internationally certified volunteers.
Huda Hamdan, Projects expert at QRCS and the programme’s coordinator, said, "The purpose of this workshop is to educate the principals of schools on the basics of dealing with disasters, the importance of preparedness for minimising casualties and losses and the organisations responsible for disaster response”.
The lectures held on Wednesday discussed the concept of disaster, types and duration of disasters, disaster management cycle, risk analysis, risk reporting matrix, vulnerability and capacity assessment (VCA) tools, community mapping, and data sorting and analysis.
According to Ms Hamdan, this is one of the five workshops to be held during November with a total of 200 attendees divided into five groups, three for men and two for ladies.
She emphasised the interest of principals to attend the workshops in light of the remarkable success of QRCS School Program over the past few years. "In the second semester, similar training workshops will be held on first aid and health educationfor the same principals”, she revealed.
Najlaa R al Kuwari, a participant who works as headmistress of Rawdat Al-Shifaa Bint Abdul-Rahman Al-Ansariya School for Girls, stated, "This workshop is useful in equipping school leaders with the knowhow to deal with disasters, both at schools and beyond, as well as to support local community in the case of emergency.”
