Supporting Qatar’s food security mission constantly tops Hassad Food’s strategic objectives, its CEO Mohamed Badr al Sadah said on Sunday.
The Hassad Food CEO also pledged company’s support to the annual Food Security Conference to be held in Doha later this month.
Qatar’s efforts to achieve food security and some prominent researches conducted in the fields of agriculture and livestock will be discussed at the second edition of the conference slated for November 26.
To be held under the patronage of Minister of Municipality and Environment HE Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al Subaie, the conference seeks to highlight the opportunities and challenges facing the national food security mission and the efforts of the state agencies, public shareholding companies and the private sector.
The conference will also discuss agricultural research and the future of food security in Qatar.
Among the objectives of the conference are reviewing the national food security strategy and what has been done so far in this regard, as well as reviewing experiences and projects of Hassad Food that are aimed at enhancing national food security.
“We aim at all times to support in developing the local agricultural sector,” Sadah said.
Muharak al Sahouti, Business Relations Director of Hassad Food, said several initiatives of the company have gone a long way in advancing Qatar’s food security goal.
The Mahaseel project, which has been rolled out to market locally-grown agricultural produce in cooperation with major retailers, has led to a surge in vegetable farming in the country, he said.
The three Central Markets in Al Wakrah, Umm Salal and Sailiyah, which will be managed by Hassad Food-subsidiary Aswaq, will open within the year, Sahouti said.
While all three markets will facilitate the purchase and sale of all kinds of provisions, each market will be dedicated for the wholesale supply of a particular provision — Al Wakra for livestock, Al Sailiyah for fruits and vegetables and Umm Salal for fish.
The upcoming Food Security Conference will establish a platform to discuss the agricultural sector’s challenges and propose effective solutions, given that local and international field experts will attend the event.
Jaber Salem al Harami, Managing Director and CEO of Dar Al Arab, which organises the conference, said, “We appreciate the strategic partnership with Hassad, as it will add another dimension to the conference.”
