The Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) opened a photovoltaic station for energy storage and charging electric vehicles at Kahramaa Complex in Mesaimeer on Sunday.
This station is the first of its kind in Qatar as it charges vehicles with electricity produced from solar energy via 216 photovoltaic panels fixed in an area of 270 square metres, which is equivalent to the row for 24 cars’ spaces. The total power produced from these panels is 72 KW at peak.
The station was opened in the presence of Kahramaa President Essa bin Hilal al Kuwari, Ambassador of Japan to Qatar HE Kazuo Sunaga, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Marubeni Power Company Yoshiyaki Yokota, directors and managers of Kahramaa among others.
The station contains a unit that has two connections of Combo and CHAdeMO types which are compatible with different types of vehicles to allow two cars to be charged at a time with a rapid charging level of 15-20 munities for the car, the maximum charging capacity is 100 KW, the station also contains a power storage unit in a battery with a capacity of 170 KW/h ,and the charging cord of 100 KW is enough to charge three cars.
"This project comes within the efforts of Kahramaa, represented by the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), in cooperation with Japanese Company Marubeni. The aim of this station is to reduce harmful carbon emissions by encouraging the usage of the solar energy as well as disseminating the use of electric cars in Qatar by providing a unique infrastructure for electric charging stations to achieve sustainability in line with Qatar National Vision 2030,” Kuwari said.
On the project cost, Kuwari said the cost is not the goal now and the goal is to spread the idea.
For his part, Marubeni Power Company CEO Yoshiyaki Yokota said, "I would like to express my sincere appreciation to KAHRAMAA for organizing this ceremony for the launch of Tarsheed Photovoltaic Station for Energy Storage and Charging Electric Vehicles.”
"We are committed to social and economic development and safeguarding the global environment. We highly respect Qatar National Vision 2030 and Kahramaa’s initiative to the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency.”
Tarsheed seeks to contribute in achieving the objectives of the Qatar National Strategic Development 2018-2022, represented in varying the energy resources for transportation in the state by 2022 to reduce the greenhouse gas, climate change, maintaining the economic and environmental balance. It also aims to raise the share of electric cars to 10 percent of the car’s sale in Qatar by 2022.
It is worth mentioning that electric cars have characterised by energy efficiency compared to traditional cars. The electric cars run 520 kilometers while the conventional car runs 322 kilometers with the same amount of natural gas.
It is also conserved car where it needs 17 KW/h of electricity to move for 100 kilometres, which costs QR5.44. The conventional car consumes 12 litres of fuel which in average costs QR24.
