QATAR Cancer Society (QCS) has concluded the ‘You can do it’ campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the most common cancers among men, especially prostate cancer, the third most common cancer in Qatar, according to Qatar National Registry.
Hiba Nasser, head of Health Education Department at QCS, said, “This campaign was launched as part of Men’s Health Awareness Month in November, aiming at raising awareness about the risk factors of prostate cancer which occurs when cells in the prostate gland start to grow uncontrollably.”
The prostate is a gland found only in males. It is a gland located in the lower urinary tract, under the bladder and around the urethra.
Nasser said that the chance of having prostate cancer rises rapidly after the age of 50. Besides, family history, diet and obesity also cause prostate cancer.
For example, if someone’s father or brother has prostate cancer, the possibility of his getting the disease doubles. Similarly, men who eat a lot of red meat or high-fat dairy products and fewer fruits and vegetables are prone to getting prostate cancer, she remarked.
Nasser said that obese men and smokers run a higher risk of getting more advanced and serious prostate cancer compared to others.
Exposure to chemicals at workplace such as a fire station can also cause prostate cancer.
She stressed the importance of early detection of prostate cancer, adding: “Early prostate cancer usually has no symptoms. However, in advanced stage, it may cause some symptoms. In most cases, symptoms are caused by benign prostatic enlargement, or an infection. Therefore, it is important that you see a doctor to understand what causes the symptoms.”
