THE total worth of Qatari investments in Turkey is about $80.1 billion, Ambassador of Turkey to Qatar HE Fikret Ozer has said.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the occasion of Qatar National Day, Ozer said the trade volume between the two countries, which was nearly QR3 billion in 2016, increased to QR8.3 billion by the end of 2018 and reached QR5.8 billion until October this year.
The ambassador underlined that the bilateral relations between Turkey and Qatar have seen tremendous progress in recent years on the basis of strategic partnership.
He added that the Turkey-Qatar Supreme Strategic Committee, which was established in 2015 as the highest institutional mechanism of cooperation, convened for the fifth time last month under the leadership of the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani and President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Seven agreements were signed during the meeting taking the total number of agreements signed during the meetings so far to 46.
The ambassador noted that economy is one area where the two countries have seen fastest progress in terms of strengthening of ties. With a total of over $18 billion, Qatar has become the 7th country in which the Turkish contracting sector has undertaken the highest volume of projects.
The Turkish ambassador added that the humanitarian and cultural relations between the two countries have also become stronger. "Our Qatari brothers have been showing growing interest in Turkish culture and language. Last year, around 100,000 Qatari citizens visited Turkey. On the other hand, Qatar has become the second home for nearly 10,000 Turkish citizens,” he said.
The ambassador noted further that National Days are important means of acknowledging the past and connecting it to the present and they serve as valuable guides for the future. "They remind us of the sacrifices of our ancestors, unite us under one flag and help us become a real nation,” he remarked.
The ambassador praised the remarkable achievements made by Qatar at the local and international levels, despite various challenges in both economic and political spheres.
In the political sphere, the ambassador said that Qatar has immensely raised its regional and international standing and become a leading political actor whose contribution to solution of regional and global challenges is highly sought and valued for.
