Local and long-distance transport was extremely disrupted on New Year’s Eve in France because of the ongoing strike against a planned pension reform.
In the capital Paris numerous metro lines were running only to a limited extent on Tuesday, while two remained completely closed.
A video showing how the female driver of a metro train was insulted and attacked by strikers is causing outrage in France.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday in a metro station in the south of the city. Images showed the woman walking to her morning shift on the platform as numerous people followed, shouting and harassing her.
“Yesterday morning the train driver of a metro was intimidated by strikers when she started work. This is not acceptable. An internal investigation has been opened,” the Parisian transport company RATP tweeted.
Hundreds of thousands are expected every year for the New Year’s Eve celebrations on the boulevard Champs-Elysees, but arriving by train was extremely difficult for tourists this year due to the large number of cancelled trains.
On New Year’s Eve, the two fully automated metro lines in Paris are scheduled to run until around 2 am. Additional buses have been put on to bring the celebrants home safely. Travel by metro, bus and tram is free every year on New Year’s Eve in Paris.
There are massive security measures in place across the city again this year.
