Muhammad Tanveer is second cricketer from Qatar to have found a place among the top T20 International performers in the world during the 2019 calendar year.
Qatar national team captain Iqbal Hussain Chaudhry finished the last year on a high when he got the 10th spot by picking up 26 wickets in 15 Twenty20 International matches.
Tanveer is now the second player to have done Qatar proud with his bat. He accumulated 428 runs in 15 matches, including four half-centuries. He smashed his highest 57 not out against Jersey. A hard-hitting batsmen, Tanveer cracked 36 boundaries and 22 sixes as well.
Qatar Cricket Association President Yousef Jeham al Kuwari was thrilled with a second national team player getting a spot among the top T20I players. “We are extremely pleased to see Muhammad Tanveer finishing the 2019 year as the 11th best batsman in the T20I cricket in the world. It is really a big and proud moment for the QCA as its two players were able to land spots among the best in the world.
“This is just a beginning and we will hopefully have more players getting inspiration from such performances and trying to follow them. We will also try to maximize the op-portunities for the national team to improve and bring better results in 2020. There are a lot of events lined up and we hope the Qatar team will keep the national flag flying,” Kuwari added.
Tanveer, who has switched to Galfar Al Misnad team in the new season from Al Feroz Youngsters, expressed his delight at his overall display in the year gone by. “Thanks to Almighty Allah, It feels great when you are on the list of achievers with cricketing greats like Virat Kohli. It is really wonderful to get so many runs. I am I happy the way I scored runs.
“I also wish to thank the QCA, my teammates both in the national team and the club and my family for their blessings. Without their support and encouragement, I don’t think if I would have done this.
“I want to add here that I owe a lot to my previous club Al Feroz Youngsters and its owner Zahid for this performance too. The kind of facilities and support I got there, it was always very inspiring. It helped us put up a consistent display at the domestic level,” Tanveer added.
The player also expressed a wish that cricket, which is bringing international recognition to Qatar, should get the same backing just as other sports. “I would also like to urge Qatar, media and fans to support cricket in same spirit as they support football here. It is always a privilege and an honour to play for Qatar and I am proud of it.”
Talking about the best moments of the 2019, Tanveer said, “Any performance that has helped my team win is memorable for me. However, if I have to single out one memora-ble innings, I would say it was a half-century against Oman, which took the match into the Super Over where we won.”
With cricket becoming very demanding, Tanveer says his new goals are fitness and being more consistent. “I am working hard on my fitness and I am thankful to have a captain like Iqbal (Hussain Chaudhry), who always backs me and motivates. We also have a wonderful coaching team and the QCA management to support us. Also I will focus on scoring more consistently for Qatar.”
“The national team’s practice camp has started. We are enthusiastic about it and looking forward keenly to playing in upcoming tournaments. We have great support and direction from our QCA president Mr. Yousef Jeham Al Kuwairi for the Qatar national team. Boys are fit enough and are waiting to kick off 2020 with a bang.
“The Qatar team has Alhumdolillah progressed consistently and I feel we will soon be achieving big victories in future. Winning the ICC World Cup qualifier is our top goal. Tournament like the recent Qatar T10 League has indeed helped Qatar cricket in general. We should be having more tournaments like this in future so that the local players get a chance to play and learn from international players during the matches,” he added.Top performersMost runs in 2019 calendar year (top 15)
