The Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani has stressed that dialogue was the only solution to the rising tensions in the region.
“Qatar and Iran agreed that de-escalation and dialogue was the only solution to regional tensions,” the Amir said at a joint press conference with Iranian President Dr Hassan Rouhani in Tehran on Sunday.
“The visit comes at a sensitive time the region is going through. It has been agreed with the brothers and with the Iranian president that dialogue is the only solution to the region’s crises, and to reducing escalation,” the Amir said.
The Amir said he had extended an invitation to the Iranian President to visit Qatar, which Rouhani promised to do sometime soon.
The Amir affirmed that his meeting with the Iranian President was positive and fruitful, as it dealt with the outstanding relations between the two countries and the means to develop them.
The Amir indicated that the two sides agreed to boost trade and tourism, pointing out that Qatar’s relation with Iran is historic and has seen great development.
“There has always been open channels and discussions with Iran even in the presence of some differences,” the Amir said appreciating Iran’s position after the blockade of Qatar. The Amir thanked Iran for providing all the facilities to Qatar and the Qatari people by immediately opening its airspace and seaports.
The Iranian president expressed his happiness at the Amir’s acceptance of the invitation to visit Iran, praising the two countries’ ties of neighbourliness and historical friendship.
Stressing the importance of stability in the region, Rouhani said, “Considering the importance of regional security — especially in the waterways in the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Sea of Oman — we decided to have more talks and cooperation for the security of the whole region.”
Rouhani added that the talks came out with important decisions regarding the expansion of bilateral relations and those existing in the economic and commercial fields, as well as the great potentials of the two countries in the scientific and cultural fields that the two countries can enhance.
Rouhani stressed the two countries will establish a joint committee in the coming months and the committee meeting will be held regularly and annually.
He expressed hope that there would be a “second committee for trade and investment cooperation in all sectors, including the technical field and other affairs”, in addition to intensifying political visits and economic delegations between the two countries.
Earlier, the Amir and the Iranian president held official talks during which they discussed bilateral relations and the ways to enhance them.
The talks also tackled several issues, especially the latest developments in the region.
