Imported fruits and vegetables were auctioned off for the first time at the newly-built Central Market in Al Sailiya on Sunday, marking the full-fledged operations of a bazaar that rivals shopping complexes in facilities.
This also marks the end of the fruits and vegetables trade at the old central market in Bu Hamour and its shifting to Al Sailiya, where partial operations began on Saturday with the auctioning of locally-grown produce. Hassad Food subsidiary Aswaq is managing and operating the Al Sailiya market in coordination with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI).
Located around 21 kilometres southwest of Doha, the central market sprawls over 78,000 square metres in a walled-off compound with separate exit and entry points and adequate parking. It features air-conditioned, spic-and-span interiors that contrast starkly with the more modest, open-air facilities at Bu Hamour.
