Indian women’s national team star Ngangom Bala Devi is set to join Scottish Women’s Premier League high-flyers Rangers FC in a landmark move announced on Wednesday.
Devi will join the Glasgow giants on an 18-month-deal from 2019 Indian Women’s League runners-up Manipur Police Sports Club, pending an international clearance, making her the first Indian woman to ply her trade abroad at a professional level.
The deal will also make the 29-year-old the first Asian woman to represent Rangers.
A talented creator and prolific scorer for both club and country, Devi has more than 50 international goals to her name, including four in a single Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualifier against Bangladesh in November 2018.
Devi revealed her delight at putting pen to paper on a historic move for Indian women’s football.
“To play my football in Europe with one of the biggest clubs in the world is something I could never have dreamed of,” Devi told the Rangers FC website.
“I hope my move to Rangers serves as an example to all the women footballers back home in India who dream of taking up the sport professionally.”
“I’m looking forward to making the most of the top-class facilities and coaching and I am certain I will benefit immensely from the standard of training and competition.
“I’m very grateful to (Women’s and Girl’s Football Manager) Amy McDonald, the coaching staff and the entire management at Rangers for believing in me.”
Devi’s move makes her the latest Asian star to join a British club, with Australian AFC Women’s Player of the Year winners Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord recently joining Korea Republic national team veterans Ji So-yun and Cho So-hyun in the English Women’s Super League.
