THE Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), represented by its Agricultural Quarantine Office, inspected a total of 5,611 imported consignments, weighing 135,637 tonnes in January, of which 31 weighing 10 tonnes were destroyed for violating the agricultural quarantine law.
The destroyed consignments were found to be largely infected by stone and non-stone lesions.
The various types of imported consignments, including plant products and production inputs were examined at different customs points.
The agricultural quarantine is the first line of defence for protection from agricultural infections. The preventive procedure aims to protect the country’s agricultural wealth from foreign-originated pests.
It also provides that all plants and agricultural products shall be subject to phytosanitary regulations to ensure that other agricultural production inputs are in conformity with the conditions and specifications.
