Hrudaya Ragangal, an annual Indian music programme, was held at Regency Hall in Doha recently, tracing the journey of Malayalam film songs over 50 years.
The three-hour programmes featured over 25 evergreen hits of Malayalam cinema composed by famous lyricist, director, producer and screenwriter Sreekumaran Thampi, who was also the chief guest on the occasion.
Thampi is widely known as the ‘Poet of Love Songs’, as a majority of his songs invoke romantic mood. He is known for his uncompromising attitude to his work and strives to make his songs blend with the scenes. He has produced a total of 25 films so far, directed 29 films and written the scripts for 85 films in Malayalam, besides writing thousands of songs.
The event was organised by Chandramohan Pillai under the banner of his film and cultural programmes production company Chandrakala Arts.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune,
Chandramohan Pillai, a music buff, said, “Sreekumaran Thampi is one of the legends of our time. His compositions are always inspiring for all
generations. We expatriates always
value his contributions to Malayalam cinema and literature.”
Noted playback singers Madhu Balakrishnan, Nishad, Ravi Shankar, Chithra Arun and Raja Lakshmi sung Thampi’s most popular songs. Noted film actress Aparna Balamurali made a guest appearance on the stage with a beautiful song.
Film actor and caricaturist Jayaraj Warrier added to the charm of the programme by describing details about Thampi’s compositions.
