The National Sport Day Committee has completed all preparations for the event to be held on Tuesday, February 11. A host of events have been lined up for the occasion across the country.
Qatar marks the National Sport Day, on the second Tuesday of February every year. The occasion attracts all segments of Qatari society to gather and practice different types of sports.
Qatar is one of the few countries in the world that attach such importance to sports through a countrywide observance of National Sport Day.
Revealing details for the celebrations at a press conference on Sunday, head of the National Sport Day Committee Abdulrahman Muslim al Dosari, said all preparations for the day have been completed.
“The Ministry of Culture and Sports was keen on diversifying the venues all over the country to guarantee the highest rate of participation of all age and society segments,” he said, adding that the National Sport Day comes within strategy of realising Qatar National Vision 2030, which focuses on developing people through sports.
Dosari said National Sport Day is a unique initiative that seeks to consolidate the concept of the importance of sport in the lives of the people. The National Sport Day reflects the keen interest of wise leadership in the people, he added.
Dosari said the celebrations this year will be distributed in nine different regions to cover all parts of the country.
The activities of the “East” will witness a celebration of 55 parties — ministries, governmental institutions, sports clubs, academies, schools, and more, while the “West” activities will feature about 25 bodies; the “North” will see the celebration of about 12 bodies, and the “South” will see events of about 13 bodies.
The Ministry of Culture and Sports has allocated 12 venues for women’s activities in the Lusail Circuit Club, the Women’s Sports Committee and some parks, sports halls and schools.
He said awareness of the importance of playing sports in Qatari society, whether among Qataris or residents, has been increasing year after year, stressing the importance of utilising the giant sporting facilities in the country.
Similarly, Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) has prepared more than 20 unique events for members of the community to enjoy including Run & Bike, the popular Fun Run, obstacle-course race, sports competitions and challenges such as badminton, basketball, running, hammer throwing, plyometric challenges, children’s gymnastics, wall climbing and football related activities.
Qatar Foundation (QF) has designed a programme for the community including obstacle course races, yoga sessions, full-body workouts, and sports tournaments to be held at the Ceremonial Court, the Green Spine, Oxygen Park, and Multaqa (Education City Student Center).
The Cultural Village Foundation ‘Katara’ has also lined up a slew of events on the Sports day. As many as 54 public and private entities, including 17 sports federations, 15 ministries and government departments, 15 health institutions and food companies will take part in the events to be held on the occasion of National Sport Day at Katara.
