Fiji is assured of its first-ever Olympic medal when the Pacific island state crushed Japan 20-5 in the rugby sevens semi-finals.
Tries from Vateuro Ravounou, Josua Tuisova, SemiKunatani and Jerry Tuwai sent the two World Cup winners into the gold medal match set for later in the day against Britain or South Africa, with Japan only managing a temporary 5-5 equaliser from Teruya Goto.
Tuisova put Fiji 10-5 up shortly before half-time and Kunatani added five further points 53 seconds after the restart, and Japan's fate was sealed for good when Lomano Lemieki was sin-binned for a fierce challenge after a Japanese kick deep into the Fiji half.
Japan had upset reigning World Cup champions and top favourites New Zealand in the first group game, and Fiji had then ousted them in the quarter-finals.
