The Al Khor Family Park will reopen for the public on Sunday (February 16) after undergoing a renovation at a cost of QR32 million.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment, in coordination with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), completed the renovation of the park and zoo in just 100 days. The renovation was carried out between October 22, 2019 and January 29, 2020.
One of the largest park for families in Qatar, Al Khor Family Park features green spaces and large trees, games area, an artificial lake and a lecture hall among others.
The upgrade work included the expansion of the zoo and introduction of more species of animals, while providing the highest safety and security standards for visitors for the park to be a major recreational destination.
The park is expected to receive 500,000 visitors annually. The entry fees for visiting Al Khor Family Park are: QR15 for adults and QR10 for children up to the age of 10.
Train ride inside the park will cost QR5. The train can accommodate 60 passengers and passes through three stations designated for it. These token fees will contribute to the efforts to improve the facilities and services for visitors.
The Al Khor Family Park includes a Roman theater that can accommodate 400 people for holding parties and events.
The park boasts of a museum consisting of a showroom and a number of halls, in addition to restaurants, cafeterias, waterfalls, fountains and two children’s play areas fully covered with a rubber floor area of about 4,000 square metres, and an outdoor sports area and a surfboard. The park has 42 species of trees, shrubs and plants.
The park has a mosque that can accommodate 360 worshipers for men and women, and 12 water coolers for drinking. There is also a large restaurant consisting of three covered halls, an external hall, two cafeterias, six public baths for men and women, in addition to 700 parking lots and 13 parking for people with special needs.
Among the most prominent works that were included in the development project for the park was the establishment of 7 new sections in the zoo, which include large and varied numbers of animals and birds that are popular with the visitors, and dedicated pathways for people with special needs.
The park has 315 animals of 49 species and families, including 290 new ones.
These new sections include unicorn barn: installation of barrier enclosure and pergolas; crocodile lake where visitors can view crocodiles up close; giraffe’s area; bear bar; predatory cats section; monkeys section and birds section.
The new animals and birds that have been added to zoo are: one Asian bear, two African lions, two Bengal tigers, two white tigers, two black jaguars and two cheetahs.
The park timings are: Saturday to Thursday: 8 am to 11 pm, Fridays (2 pm to 11 pm).
Tuesday is reserved for women and children only.
