All construction works related to Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) will be complete by the end of this year and the planned city will be fully functional from next year, a senior official of the project’s developer Msheireb Properties has said.
In an interview with Qatar Tribune, Msheireb Properties Acting Chief Officer of Design and Delivery Mohammed Essa al Boainain said that construction work on all phases except the fourth phase is complete and a number of hotels, retail shops, residential units and other facilities are already operational.
"Msheireb Downtown Doha consists of four phases and phase one is further divided into three sub phases like Phase 1 A, Phase 1 B and Phase 1 C. Phase 1 A mainly consists of Qatar Academy School, renovation of four mosques, national archive building and other renovation work and was the first to be completed in 2014. Phase 1 C, consisting of commercial offices and retail shops, was the last one to be completed few months back,” he said.
In between, he said, Phase 2 consisting of Alwadi hotel, Park Hyatt Doha as part of phase 3 and Phase 1 B 5 consisting of five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel and other hotels were also completed.
"The only remaining phase is Phase 4. This phase is a bit delayed as we redesigned the whole phase in order to accommodate the Qatar Rail station and its needs. We are targeting to finish Phase 4 by the end of this year. The overall development will be fully functional next year,” he said.
Once fully developed, he said, Msheireb Downtown Doha will have 100 mixed-use building, 800 residential units, more than 300 retail units and 17 commercial buildings, in addition to four hotels, a school, 3 mosques, Msheireb Museums, the Galleria Mall and many other facilities.
"Most of the buildings are ready and over 80 families are already living in Msheireb Downtown Doha currently. Some retails shops are also already open,” Boainain said.
A mixed use development, he said, Msheireb Downtown Doha will accommodate over 2,500 as residents, 12,000 workers to manage facilities and 50,000 visitors on a daily basis once it is fully operational.
"Convenient access to MDD will be facilitated through a variety of transport options; over 10,000 parking spaces spread over six underground floors, tram, pedestrian-friendly streets, bicycle lanes, as well as hosting the main hub station for Qatar Rail. This is all complemented by MDD’s modern, smart city infrastructure for seamless connectivity and communication. It will also have 10,000 CCTVs to ensure safety of residents and visitors,” he said.
The official said that buildings to accommodate firms registered with Qatar Financial Centre have been identifies and ready for them to move in.
