The Ministry of Interior (MoI) marked the World Civil Defence Day, which is celebrated worldwide on the March 1 each year, to remind the role played by Civil Defence in protecting lives and properties, and to promote awareness and community education of safety and security measures.
This year’s celebration came under the theme of ‘Civil Defence and a first aider in every home’ to emphasise the importance of raising awareness of safety and security measures in society and training family members on how to deal with disasters and providing them with the necessary skills to handle the situations.
During the ceremony, Director-General of Civil Defence Brigadier Hamad Othman al Duhaimi highlighted the support provided by the Ministry of Interior, providing the directorate with modern equipment and facilities, and qualifying its personnel.
He stressed the directorate’s keenness to enhance the family’s role in prevention and also in reducing the repercussions of disasters that may occur so that everyone can help the civil defence in its efforts to protect lives and property.
He said the General Directorate of Civil Defence, with its human cadres trained in firefighting and rescue work, always prioritises safety of life.
Brigadier Duhaimi called on all segments of the society to cooperate with the the General Directorate of Civil Defence in order to activate this year’s theme of ‘Civil Defence and a first aider in every home’ to promote safety of the people by educating family members, and instilling safety concepts in them.
He announced the launch of a one-year training awareness programme targeting school students, commercial complexes and state ministries to achieve this year’s theme.
Regarding the new Civil Defence fleet, Brigadier Duhaimi said the administration added 11 fire trucks to its fleet late last year, in addition to 23 other vehicles that were contracted, which will arrive this year, to be deployed in extinguishing fire and protecting buildings and towers, rescuing during accidents and dealing with chemicals.
For his part, Head of Media and Awareness Section of the General Directorate of Civil Defence Major Jabir Mohammed al Marri said the directorate’s keenness to hold the Civil Defence Day every year, in cooperation with the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO), aims to provide awareness and education in the safety and security procedures in every home.
He said the directorate’s mission is to highlight potential risks in homes, procedures for securing kitchens, heating tools, through meetings and awareness programmes.
He highlighted what the General Directorate of Civil Defence has done over the past years, through a campaign of smoke detectors, targeting shopping malls, shops and homes, to outline fire safety measures.
At the end of the ceremony, the directorate honoured some of its outstanding personnel, as well as collaborators and supporters of its efforts, in addition to the schools participating in the celebration.
