There are plans to increase the number of e-gates at the Hamad International Airport (HIA) within next six months. Currently, there are 40 e-gates at HIA — 20 each for arrival and departures halls.
This was disclosed by Brigadier General Mohammed Rashid al Mazrouei, Director of Airport Passports Department.
“There is an effort now to increase the number of e-gates during the next six months. The number of users of electronic gates currently ranges between 15,000 and 18,000 daily,” he said.
Brigadier Mazrouei said the smart airport system will be implemented soon. The new service will help passengers in completing many procedures of their travel by themselves. — from entry to the airport to boarding the plane without dealing with anyone.
These procedures start from doing registration, printing boarding pass, placing stickers of luggage, and putting baggage in their designated areas, and then crossing through e-gates until arriving at boarding gates.
He, however, said the entry and exit counters would still be there to deal with any problem the travellers might face for any reason.
He said the Airport Security Administration has advanced devices to detect forged travel documents, noting that many cases of forgery have been detected.
He pointed out that the Airport Passports Department, along with partners at HIA, has put in place many plans to amend the entry and exit systems in line with the Qatar Vision 2030.
He pointed out to the presentation of many new ideas, including allowing tourist visa holders to use e-gates while leaving the country.
Brigadier Mazrouei pointed out that citizens of 96 countries are now able to obtain an immediate visa at HIA upon arrival, provided they possess a valid passport for a period of six months, a hotel reservation, a return ticket and that the purpose of the visit is for tourism, according to a report in Al Watan.
