Newly-appointed national team head coach Nabil Maaloul said he is determined to steer Syria to the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time ever.
The former Tunisia national team head coach, who has signed two-year contract, said it will be a big challenge but one that he is relishing as Syria look to better their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign where they advanced to the play-off against Australia.
“My first task is to bring joy to the Syrian people by steering the national team to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” said Maâloul, who coached Tunisia in Russia 2018.
“I know very well what to expect and I will give it my all, especially as I know the capabilities of the Syrian players.”
Maâloul said he plans to make full use of the players available to him.
“I know several players who play in Egypt, Turkey, Kuwait and Netherlands and they all have good capabilities,” he said. “We will try our best to introduce young players from the U23 team who are the future of Syria national team.
“My mission will not be easy but I will give all I can to replicate the good results that I had with the Tunisia national team,” he said. “I want to lead Syria to the FIFA World Cup Finals for the first time ever.”
The Qasioun Eagles are currently top of Group A of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 after claiming five victories from as many games.
Syria have three matches remaining and should the 57-year-old Maâloul steer them to two wins, the West Asian side will not only advance to the third round of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers but also confirm their berth in the AFC Asian Cup China 2023.
They play Maldives away when the Asian Qualifiers resume before facing Guam and China PR to close off their campaign.
