Following the government’s decision to temporarily close in-person money exchange and transfer service offices in Qatar, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Kenyan expatriates are getting more comfortable now using Ooredoo Mobile Money to transfer money.
A few days days the decision was implemented, the expatriates said they have not faced any problems in using the Ooredoo Mobile Money app to transfer money to their families’ mobile wallets in Kenya as well as to their bank accounts back home.
Omar Farah, a Kenyan expatriate, said a majority of Kenyans have switched to Ooredoo Mobile Money for money transactions. “Although many people have been having the Ooredoo Mobile Money App for a long time, some had not taken it an option to send money to their loved ones, or for transferring money to their bank accounts in Kenya,” he said.
Farah added that he has been using M-Pesa, a mobile phone-based transfer service in Kenya, to send money to his beneficiaries’ mobile wallets through MoneyGram.
“From it, one can transfer money to a bank account in Kenya such as Equity, Commercial Bank, among other banks,” he said.
According to him, through the Ooredoo Mobile Money, one can also do exchange of money through Al Dar Exchange,
Al Zaman Exchange, Gulf Exchange, among others, from the comfort of one’s home. One can also use Western Union, he said, adding that one can do online banking for money transfer as well.
“One can do a standing order whereby the money is transferred from one’s bank account in Doha to one’s Kenya’s bank account. This is ideal for those who have families,” Farah
added.
David Kombo, another Kenyan, said the process of sending money home is easy and the temporary closure of the face-to-face money exchange and transfer services have not affected him in any way.
“What you need to do is go to Ooredoo self-service machine and deposit the amount you want into your mobile wallet,” he said.
Sending money through the Ooredoo Mobile Money is not a complex process, he noted, describing it as “an efficient and safe way of transferring money”.
Another Kenyan said he and his friends have not had any problems in sending money back home since the government announced the closure of in-person money exchange and transfer bureaus.
