dpaNairobiKenya’s newly elected President William Ruto has been sworn in.The country’s chief justice administered the oath to the 55-year-old in the capital Nairobi on Tuesday.Ruto narrowly won the election on August 9 against long-time opposition leader and former prime minister Raila Odinga. Odinga did not acknowledge defeat, but the East African country’s highest court rejected his challenge to the election results on grounds of fraud. The winner of the election, Ruto, previously Kenya’s vice president, had promised in the election campaign to support small entrepreneurs with social benefits as president. He presented himself as an up-and-coming man coming from a humble background. Before entering politics, Ruto first built up a chicken farm and successfully invested the profits in the hotel, real-estate and insurance industries. However, Ruto is also controversial: In 2010, he was indicted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague for crimes against humanity. He was accused of being partly responsible for the violence following the 2007 elections. At that time, more than 1,000 people died. However, the case was dropped.
