Al Sadd continued their impressive start to the season with a 5-1 thumping of Al Sailiya at the Education City Stadium on Monday and remain top of the QNB Stars League.
The Wolves have bagged 10 goals in their opening two matches, with new signing Santi Cazorla proving his class once more.
In the other matches on Monday, Al Kharaitiyat edged Qatar SC 2-1, while Yohan Boli’s brace helped Al Rayyan beat Al Gharafa 3-1.
Heading into the game with the AFC Champions League on their minds, Al Sadd got off to an attacking start as Baghdad Bounedjah blazed two quick chances over the bar.
The Wolves, though, were not to be denied for long and soon found the net just seven minutes in. A delightful diagonal pass from Santi Cazorla picked out Hassan al Haydos on the right, and the Qatari took the ball in stride before lifting the ball over the onrushing Lecomte with a deft finish.
Cazorla soon made it with his third goal in two matches’. The Spaniard converted from the spot after Pedro Miguel was fouled in the box.
Al Sailiya grew into the match in search of a goal, and they were rewarded in the 41st minute as captain Majdi Siddiq shrugged off his marker before finding the bottom corner with a shot from outside the box.
It was all Sailiya before the break, and Tiago Bezerra almost levelled just before half time, but the Brazilian saw his effort roll narrowly wide after good work to beat the Al Sadd defence.
Al Sailiya were on the front foot in the second half as Al Sadd struggled to get out of their own half. Bezerra and Hamoudan had chances to score for the Peregrines, but The Wolves held firm and saw their lead extend in the 59th minute.
Cazorla split the Sailiya defence with a simple pass to Bounedjah, who this time made no mistake, drilling his effort into the left corner of Lecomte’s goal.
Nam Tae-hee then scored Al Sadd’s fourth goal in the 81st minute before substitute Ahmed Bader Sayyar completed the rout with a lovely lob over the goalie after a pass from Rodrigo Tabata.
Promoted Al Kharaitiyat beat Qatar SC 2-1 as goals from Mohammed Osman and an own goal by Qatar SC’s Kayke Rodriguez in the 50th minute ensured Yousef Adam’s side bounced back from their opening day loss to Al Sadd. Elmehdi Barrahma scored a 75th-minute consolation for Qatar SC.
Meanwhile, Al Rayyan got back to winning ways as Boli, and Yacine Brahimi sealed a much-needed win for the Lions against Al Gharafa at the Al Gharafa Stadium.
Boli beat the offside trap to score the opener in the 25th minute before adding to his tally in the second half with a crisp finish after being fed by the brilliant Brahimi.
Jonathan Kodjia pulled one back for the Cheetahs one minute before time, but Brahimi crushed hopes of a comeback showing great skill to beat the Al Gharafa defence before coolly slotting past Qasem in goal. Results
