THE Board of Trustees of Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding announced on Thursday that the steering committee has completed the preliminary screening of the submissions for the sixth edition of the award in 2020.
The committee said the number of entries exceeded 300 from 42 Arab and foreign countries, received from individuals and institutions concerned with translation.
Dr Hanan Al Fayyad, media spokesperson for the award, said in a statement that this edition has seen more participants than the last one in which 234 competed, which bears testimony to the award’s success in achieving its mission of cultural and knowledge communication at the global level.
She added that the winners will be announced on December 12, noting that the participants in this year’s edition are from Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Canada, the United States, Britain and South Korea.
Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding was founded in Doha in 2015. It is an international prize run by a board of trustees, a steering committee and independent panels of judges.
The total value of the award is $2m. The award seeks to honour translators and acknowledge their role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation among peoples and nations of the world.
