Qatar’s trade surplus increased 10.7 percent to QR6.9 billion in August when compared with the trade surplus registered in the previous month, according to the foreign merchandise trade balance figures released by the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) on Sunday.
The preliminary figures of the value of exports of domestic goods, re-exports and imports for August, however, showed that the trade surplus in August this year decreased by QR 5.2 billion, or 42.9 percent, when compared with the same month of last year.
The total exports of goods including exports of goods of domestic origin and re-exports amounted to around QR14 billion in August 2020, showing a decrease of 33.8 percent compared to August 2019, and an increase of 3.3 percent compared to July 2020.
On the other hand, the imports of goods in August 2020 amounted to around QR7.1 billion, showing a decrease of 21.6 percent over August 2019. On a month- on- month (m-o-m) basis the imports decreased by 3 percent.
The year-on-year decrease in total exports was mainly due to lower exports of petroleum gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons like LNG, condensates, propane, butane and others reaching approximately QR7.7 billion in August, a decrease of 41.6 percent.
Exports of petroleum oils and oils from bituminous minerals (crude) decreased 29.5 percent QR2.4 billion and the petroleum oils and oils from bituminous minerals (not crude) decreased 7.2 percent QR1.3 billion.
In August 2020, China was at the top of the countries of destination for Qatar’s exports with close to QR2.6 billion, a share of 18.2 percent of total exports. It was followed by Japan with almost QR2.2 billion (15.8 percent) and India with about QR1.9 billion, a share of 13.7 percent.
During August 2020, the group of ‘Parts of Aeroplanes or Helicopters’ was at the top of the imported group of commodities, with QR0.3 billion, showing a decrease of 33.8 percent compared to August 2019.
In second place was ‘Electrical Apparatus for Line Telephony/Telegraphy, Telephone Sets’ with QR0.2 billion, showing an increase of 21.8 percent and in third place was ‘Motor cars & other motor vehicles for the transport of persons’ with QR 0.2 billion, a decrease of 42.6 percent.
In August 2020, United State of America was the leading country of origin for Qatar’s imports with about QR1.6 billion, accounting for 22.5 percent of total imports. It was followed by China with QR0.9 billion, accounting for 13.2 percent, and India with QR0.4 billion, accounting for 5.7 percent.
