MANILA: An estimated 214,000 additional babies are expected to be born at the end of the year in the Philippines after many couples failed to use contraception during the coronavirus lockdown, a government agency said on Saturday.
The additional births were to come on top of the 1.7 million new babies that were earlier estimated to be born by the end of the year, said Juan Antonio Perez III, executive director of the Commission on Population.
Perez said the projection was based on the fact that 600,000 women were unable to get their contraceptive pills when a lockdown was imposed on the main island of Luzon and other high-risk areas in the Philppines in March.
“We are closely monitoring the possible impact of the lockdowns on our population,” he said. (DPA)
