Injaaz Stud’s Lekhraib, with Marco Casamento in the saddle, claimed the Doha Cup triumph with a short-head win in the Conditions for Local Purebred Arabians in the 10th Race Meeting of Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) at Al Rayyan Park on Thursday.
The feature race produced a thrilling action with Barra, helmed by Soufiane Saadi, just finishing short of Mohammed Ghazali-trained 6-year-old Lekhraib in the QR100,000 event.
Lekhraib (AF AlBahar x Grace T) had narrowly missed out on a victory on his last outing but the Mohammed Gassim Ghazali trained-horse made amends on dirt on Thursday in fine style. Having finished runner up last month over C&D, the 6yo chestnut had Marco Casamento for company in the six furlong sprint, and despite a threatening challenge by a duo saddled by Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle – Patrice Alexandre Nicolet’s Barra (Munjiz x Daniah) and Umm Qarn’s Sealine (Amer x Jaljalah) – in the final few metres of the race, a timely lunge of the head at the post handed Lekhraib a short head victory.
Ronan Thomas rode Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle-trained Sealine to third position, with the winning side receiving QR57,000.
Team Barra got QR 22,000 for second place, while Team Sealine walked away with 11,000 for third position.
Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi presented trophies to the winners of Doha Cup.
In the Purebred Arabian Conditions, the Osama Omer Al Dafea-owned & trained Baker De Saularie was victorious. The race carried a prize of QR100,000. Mickael Berto rode the 6-year-old horse to a 1¾-length win in the 1800m run.
