New York: A jersey that belonged to basketball legend Michael Jordan was auctioned for a record sum of around $10 million, the auction house Sotheby’s said. It’s now the most expensive game-worn sports memorabilia ever sold at auction, according to Sotheby’s. The jersey was worn during the 1998 NBA finals of Jordan’s "The Last Dance” season, his final one with the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls won the series 4 games to 2 for their third consecutive NBA title.
There were around 20 bids for the uniform and the auction house did not disclose who placed the highest bid of $10.1 million. Sotheby’s had originally estimated the price of the jersey at around $5 million dollars.
Previously, the most expensive sport-worn memorabilia ever sold at auction was Diego Maradona’s 1986 World Cup match-shirt, which was auctioned in May for $8.39 million. (DPA)
