The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has detected 68 violations by different companies and commercial stores during the inspection campaigns across the country. The campaign aims to ensure compliance of companies and commercial outlets with the implementation of Law No (8) of 2008 regarding consumer protection, and the regulations in force in light of COVID-19 outbreak.
In a statement, the ministry said 61 of the violations were non-compliance with the conditions related to health and safety for the consumer, a violation of Article No 13 of the Consumer Protection Law No. 8 of 2008. The law states that the supplier shall guarantee the conformity of the commodity or service to the declared and approved standard specifications, and the supplier shall be held liable for non-compliance with the conditions of public health and safety.
The remaining seven violations are related to selling face masks and sanitizers that do not conform to the standard specifications, which is a violation of Article 6 of the same law. The law states that no defective commodity shall be sold, displayed, presented, promoted or advertised.
The penalty for violating Law No (8) of 2008 ranges between administrative closure and fines which vary between QR3,000 and QR1000,000.
