Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) HE Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah and President of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), met separately with President of the United Nations Human Rights Council Ambassador Federico Villegas; Head of the Peace and Human Rights Division at the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Dr. Simon Geissbuhler; and Director of the Geneva Center for Security Sector Governance Ambassador Dr. Simon Geissbuhler.
The meetings focused on global human rights issues, cultural integration, and interfaith dialogue, as well as Qatar’s preparations to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Her Excellency met with the President of the UN Human Rights Council to discuss the complex situation of human rights and its national institutions in light of the devastating impact of climate change and the war in Ukraine, the related economic and financial crises, and the ongoing fears caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
She said the multilateral system is under severe strain, as countries in many parts of the world have imposed restrictions on the civil space of human rights movements, and these movements have sometimes been harassed, emphasising the importance of relying on a strong international system based on human rights protection, as well as independent and effective human rights institutions, and an active civil society at the national, regional, and international levels. She praised the Human Rights Council’s leadership, which she described as wise in these critical times.
