The Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding announced the winners of the sixth edition of the award at a virtual ceremony on Sunday.
The first prize in the category of translation from English into Arabic was awarded to Abiba Asan Abdallah Asan for the translation of The Medieval Islamic Republic of Letters by Muhsin J Al Musawi, while the second prize was won by Muammad Ghalim for the translation of Language, Consciousness, Culture by Ray Jackendoff. The third prize went to Hisham Ibrhim Khalifah for the translation of The Oxford Dictionary of Pragmatics by Yan Huang.
In the category of translation from Arabic into English, the first prize was granted to Robert Myers and Nada Saab for the translation of Sentence to Hope by Sa’dallah Wannus, while the third prize was shared by Jonathan Wright for the translation of Fihris by Sinan Antun, and Adil Babikr for the translation of Mansi: A Rare Man in His Own Way by Al Tayyib Salih.
In the category of translation from Persian into Arabic, the first prize was shared by Hasan Al Sarraf for the translation of Al Sahra’ by Ali Shari’ati, and Mustafa Ahmad Al Bakkur for the translation of Al-Zaydiyah fi Iran by Muhammad Kazim Rahmati. The third prize was also shared between Basil Ahmad Adnawi for the translation of Tarikh Al Adab Al Farisi by Amad Tamim Dari, and Sadiq Khursha for the translation of Min Madi Al Adab Al Irani by ‘Abd Al Husayn Zarin Kub.
In the category of translation from Arabic into Persian, the second prize was given to Sadiq Darabi for the translation of Duruz Bilgrad by Rabi’ Jabir, while the third prize went to Amal Nabhani for the translation of Frankshtayn fi Baghdad by Amad Sa’dawi.
The Category of Achievement was won by The Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies; Roger Allen, Musa Baydaj and Yusuf Bakkar. The Category of Achievement Awards in Korean went to Kim Neung Woo and Kim Jeong A (Karimah). The Category of Achievement Awards in Pashtu was granted to The Afghan Organisation for Media and Researches; The Category of Achievement Awards in Bengali was awarded to ‘Abdallah Ma’ruf Muhammad Shah ‘Alim; The Category of Achievement Awards in Hausa was given to Muhammad Sani Umar; The category of Translation Studies and Dictionaries went to Tahsin Al-Taji Al-Faruqi, Abd Al-Nabi Al-Qayyim and Najaf ‘Ali Mirza’i; and Translation Encouragement Award was granted to Fenix Forlag.
In a speech on this occasion, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding Dr Hassan Al Nima stressed that the award has become a cultural landmark of Qatar and represents a contribution from Qatar to illuminating the path of human culture.
The award, established in 2015, seeks to honour translators and acknowledge their role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation among peoples and nations of the world.
