The Qatari economy is open and is welcoming of Somalian goods, especially its livestock and meat products, Qatar Chamber’s Second Vice Chairman Rashid bin Hamad Al Athba said in meeting with a high-profile Somalian delegation in Doha on Wednesday.
The visiting delegation was headed by Somalian Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Duran Farah and included the First Counsellor at its Embassy in Qatar, Abib Muse Farah.
In the meeting, the two sides reviewed economic and commercial relations and the means of enhancing them, especially between the private sectors. They also discussed ways of promoting bilateral trade and stimulating investments.
Athba stressed that the two countries were bound by strong and close relations and pointed to a slew of agreements signed between them as a testament to it. Among those agreements are deals for the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion, on encouraging and protecting mutual investments, on maritime transport, on economic, trade and technical cooperation and the employment of Somali workers in Qatar.
Athba emphasised the chamber’s interest in enhancing economic and commercial cooperation with the Somalian businesses and pointed out that Qatari businessmen were eager to identify the investment opportunities available in Somalia.
He praised the work quality of Somalian employees in Qatar and said Qatari labour market welcomes them in various fields.
The Somali minister highlighted the investment climate in his country and potential investment opportunities that can be utilised by Qatari businessmen. He said Somalia was seeking to attract Qatari investors to establish projects supporting the development process in the country and create jobs for the Somali youth.
“There are several sectors in which Qatari businessmen can invest in such as agriculture and livestock projects,” the minister said, noting that Somalia is known for its meat and livestock industry and was eager to boost their exports to Qatar.
