Al Gharafa hoopsters once again stamped their class on the Qatar Cup as they lifted the trophy a fourth time at the Al Gharafa Sports Club on Wednesday.
Al Gharafa claimed the 2020/2021 Qatar Basketball Cup with an absorbing 86-77 victory over Al Shamal in
the final.
This was their fourth title having emerged champions on three earlier occasions as well.
In 2014, Al Gharafa beat Al Rayyan 91-88 to capture their first title. They beat El Jaish 65-57 to win the 2015 Qatar Basketball Cup, and in 2017, Al Gharafa defeated Al Rayyan 104-91 to capture their third title.
Al Gharafa won the 2020/2021 Qatar Basketball Cup after a fantastic campaign, where they beat Al Wkarah 112-81 in the quarter-finals and defeated Qatar SC 83-71 in the semi-final.
Speaking to the victory, Al Gharafa’s Franklin Session, said, “It is an amazing win. Hats off to Shamal as they played very well today. They have us on the ropes for a while, but we stayed together as a team and win the title.”
Al Gharafa captain Abdulrahman Saad, said: “It was a tiring game. We have played three games in five days. Contrary to the league final this time, Shamal have their full team, but I think we played better basketball today and are the deserving winners.”
Al Gharafa’s coach Kosay Hatem was equally delighted. “It is a big win for us. Now we have won two trophies this season. The credit goes to the players as they played like a unit throughout the season,” he said.
