Lagos: Fifty-three people, mostly women and children, have been released from the hands of a criminal gang in west-central Nigeria, a local government official said Monday. Most of the released had been kidnapped on their way home from a wedding in Niger State a week ago, the state governor’s spokeswoman, Mary Noel-Berje, told dpa. Others had been in the hands of the unnamed armed group for even longer, Noel-Berje said. Some of the released were in poor health because they had been tortured and been held under harsh conditions, the spokeswoman added. (dpa)
