The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the completion of upgrade of two intersections on Al Khafji Street, the Environment Intersection on Environment Street, and the Jelaiah Intersection on Jasim bin Hamad Street. The upgraded intersections are now open to traffic as part of the Road Improvement Works for Roads, Junctions and Roundabouts in Greater Doha, Phase 9.
On this occasion, Eng. Ali Sami Jamal, the Doha Project Engineer at the Roads Projects Department at ‘Ashghal,’ highlighted the importance of upgrades since they help to regulate traffic movements and increase road safety, especially following the recent opening of the Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor and, in particular, the Umm Lekhba Interchange. These newly opened intersections will provide access to service facilities in the area and will link directly to the high-frequency Al Khafji Street as well as Jasim bin Hamad Street and Environment Street, which connect to several important areas, such as the Jelaiah Diplomatic Area, in addition to residential areas such as North and South Al Duhail and Umm Lekhba.
Eng. Jamal also explained that the completion of the upgrades to the two intersections significantly increased traffic flow and reduced congestion in the area, in particular as a result of the project aimed at improving traffic flow and increasing vehicle capacity.
Eng. Ali Sami Jamal also indicated that, in line with the support given by the Public Works Authority to local manufacturers and in line with the Ta’heel initiative launched by the Authority in 2017, local materials and manufacturers had relied on most of the work of the project. Materials and components supplied by local manufacturers included gabbro, asphalt and interlock where the local Qatari component used for the project had reached 100%.
In addition to the upgrade of the two intersections, the project also included a total of 1.8 km of road works, the construction of a new entrance on Jasim bin Hamad Street serving the petrol station, as well as a new lane to accommodate traffic on Jasim bin Hamad Street heading to Al Khafji Street. Landscaping and beautification work was also carried out alongside the intersections of Al Khafji Street.
