Huawei is committed to train and develop 10,000 Information and Communications Technology (ICT) talents in Qatar in the next three years, a senior official of the Chinese multinational technology company has said.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the ongoing Milipol Qatar 2021 exhibition, Huawei Vice President Cyber Security & Privacy, Global Public Affairs Mika Lauhde said, “Huawei has partnered with three top universities namely Qatar University (QU), Hamad Bin Kahlifa University (HBKU) and Community College of Qatar (CCQ) in Qatar to set up ICT colleges and impart training in 5G technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing technology to local
people.”
Through the ICT college initiative in Qatar, he said, Huawei plans to develop ICT professionals and continuously update its school-enterprise cooperation solutions in cutting-edge
technologies.
“There is a huge focus in Qatar on developing ICT talents for the future. As part of its long-term commitment to the Qatari market, Huawei has been imparting training in ICT for quite some time in Qatar. We are planning to do it on a larger scale,” Lauhde said.
“In 2017, we launched the seeds for the future programme in cooperation with the CRA Communications Management Agency. In the past four years, 73 outstanding college students were selected to participate in the program, and 30 of them were given the opportunity to study at Huawei headquarters in China. In 2017, we cooperated with the Ministry of Education to launch the ICT competition. Over the past four years, 2,500 people and seven universities were involved. Twelve outstanding students from four teams participated in the Middle East regional finals on behalf of Qatar and won outstanding results,” Lauhde said.
As part of our commitment to the Qatari market, he said, Huawei has also donated three labs in Qatar: the AI Laboratory of QU, the AI Laboratory of HBKU, and the Tasmu Laboratory of
Ministry of Transport and
Communications.
Providing an overview about Huawei Middle East Talent Ecosystem, he said, “Huawei’s talent ecosystem consists of four parts: Seeds for the Future, ICT competition (practice competition, innovation competition, and developer competition), Internship Programme, and ICT Academy. Huawei works with local universities, partners, and government and enterprise customers to focus on local talent development and cultivate more qualified ICT talent for the local region.”
“The talent ecosystem has lasted five years and has now covered 440 universities in the region with cooperation from more than 20 ministries and commissions. In 2020, the LearnOn online learning platform was launched in the Middle East. Based on the overall talent ecosystem strategy, more than 35,000 people have been trained, of which more than 9,000 have been certified by Huawei,” he said.
“We aim to benefit more university teachers and students in the digital world, enable more people to enjoy equal and high-quality education, enhance digital skills, and inject fresh impetus into the industry,” he said.
Since 2015, Huawei has partnered with more than 600 international universities to set up Huawei ICT academies, helping the universities improve their ICT teaching abilities and train more than 1,500 teachers.
