Education is important - even for teenage football sensations like Germany’s Florian Wirtz, who will continue his school lessons even when on international duty.
The 17-year-old Bayer Leverkusen star could make his senior debut for Germany against Iceland in Thursday’s opening World Cup qualifier but must take care of his homework first.
“We also have a teacher in the backroom staff for the first time because Florian is still doing his Abitur (high school leaver’s exams),” German federation (DFB) director Oliver Bierhoff said Monday.
Teachers attending international squads at youth level is not uncommon with the DFB but it previously has not been required with the full squad. Wirtz is in his first senior squad along with fellow teenager Jamal Musiala, 18, of Bayern Munich.
“I am delighted that they’re part of the squad,” said Bierhoff. “Both have shown what they’re capable of and both have shown how technically gifted they are.”
