The Indian Sports Centre (ISC), an apex body under the aegis of the Embassy of India, organised an event to felicitate the visiting table tennis players of the Indian National Team recently.
The Indian team included ace players Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee, who have qualified for Tokyo Olympics. The team was also accompanied by three national coaches -- Sandeep Gupta, Arup Basak and Soumyadeep Roy.
The felicitation started with a welcome address by Varkey Boban, ISC Secretary for Table Tennis, followed by ISC President address by Dr Mohan Thomas.
Indian Ambassador to Qatar HE Dr Deepak Mittal, patron of ISC; Suman Sonkar, second secretary (Head of Chancery) at Embassy of India, representing the coordinating officer of ISC; and Sheji Valiyakath, vice-president of ISC; were also present at the event.
In his address, Ambassador Mittal extended his warm welcome, on behalf of the Indian community in Qatar, to the delegates.
He expressed delight to witness the excellent performance of the Indian National Team from which four members have been selected for the Olympic Games 2021 to be held in Tokyo, Japan.
The ambassador added that the team has brought pride to the 700,000 Indian residents of Qatar, who wanted to come out in large number to watch the team, but have been restricted physically due to COVID-19 protocol.
On his part, Dr Thomas said, “On behalf of Indian Sports Centre, we extend warm welcome to all of you. We are indeed proud to be with the legends of table tennis today. It is a matter of great pride for every Indian to see that four of our top players are selected for the upcoming Olympic games.
“We take this opportunity to congratulate and felicitate each one of you for making the country proud. We wish you great success in the Olympic games and we hope to celebrate more medals in the next game.”
Mementos were handed over by the Indian ambassador to all the players who have qualified for Olympics. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by T. S. Sreenivas, general secretary of ISC.
