Despite complaints from jailed Russian dissident Alexei Navalny about pain and a lack of medical care, a Russian commission on human rights sees little cause for concern.
Members of a public commission on the protection of human rights in detention centres on Sunday said they visited Navalny at the IK-2 detention centre in Pokrov, about 100 kilometres east of Moscow, after reports of his poor health.
The panel found that his leg hurt and he asked for assistance to get painkillers, but he did not issue any other requests beyond that, the news agency TASS reported.
“He can continue to walk on his own,” the commission said, according to TASS.
Navalny had complained of severe back pain and described how he could no longer put weight on his right leg in a post on his Instagram account. His lawyers and the European Union expressed concern.
The commission’s visit on Friday morning was confirmed on Navalny’s Twitter account, though a tweet expressed doubts over why the commission did not publish a report immediately after the visit.
Perhaps consultations with the leadership had been necessary to make an announcement afterwards - “something like he can walk on his own,” the tweet said.
Navalny was sentenced to several years in prison in early February for allegedly violating parole requirements in an earlier criminal case while recovering in Germany from a poison attack.
The sentence has been heavily criticised internationally and considered politically motivated. The EU has been calling for Navalny’s immediate release for weeks.
