Kamal al-Ganzouri, who served as a prime minister in the era of Egypt’s ousted president Hosny Mubarak, died on Wednesday, state televised reported. He was 88 years old.
Al-Ganzouri died at an air force hospital on the outskirts of Cairo due to an unspecified health problem, according to the broadcaster.
Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly mourned al-Ganzouri, calling him a “great national personality.” Al-Ganzouri served as a prime minister for three years starting in 1996 under Mubarak, who was deposed in a popular uprising in 2011.
In November 2011, al-Ganzouri was renamed a prime minister by a military council that ruled Egypt for more than a year after Mubarak’s toppling.
At the time, anti-Mubarak protesters opposed he appointment, regarding al-Ganzouri as part of the Mubarak regime. Al-Ganzouri kept the post for eight months.
