Even as Qatar’s construction industry in March 2021 lost some of the pace it picked up in February, activity in the key villa construction remained strong.
Almost 71 percent of the permits issued in March for new residential buildings are for villa construction, suggesting a solid construction growth outlook in the residential building sector.
According to the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA), municipalities in Qatar issued 1,194 building permits in March. Nearly 48 percent (573) of them are for new buildings, including both residential and non-residential structures. Almost 47 percent (567) of them are for extensions or additions and the remaining 5 percent (54) for fencing purposes.
Of the residential permits, those for "dwellings of housing loans permits” accounted for 21 percent (107) and apartments accounted for 5 percent (23). As many as 355 permits (71 percent) were issued for villa construction.
The PSA report also shows pronounced activity in the construction of commercial buildings. Of the permits issued for building non-residential structures in March, 44 percent (32) were for commercial buildings. It is followed by permits for state and industrial buildings such as workshops and factories with 23 percent (17). Other non-residential building permits accounted for 8 percent (six) of the total.
In March, Al Rayyan municipality issued the highest number of building permits — 445 permits or 37 percent of the total. It is followed by Doha with 215 permits or 18 percent, Al Da’ayen with 179 permits or 15 percent, Al Wakra with 171 permits or 14 percent, Umm Slal with 89 permits or 7 percent, Al Khor with 41 permits or 3 percent, Al Shehaniya with 38 permits or 3 percent and Al Shammal with 16 permits or 2 percent.
The total number of building permits issued in March saw an 8 percent decline from that in February.
The last month also saw the completion of 285 new buildings — 231 residential and 54 non-residential buildings. A review of the building completion certificates issued in March shows that Al Rayyan municipality issued 106 certificates. It is followed by Al Wakrah with 100, Al Da’ayen with 61, Doha with 58, Umm Slal with 36, Al Khor with 14, Al Shammal with 13 and Al Shahaniya with six.
When compared with the building completion certificates issued in February, PSA has reported a 17 percent increase in March.
