Myanmar’s military continued its bloody crackdown on people protesting against the junta’s rule, arresting at least 30 demonstrators in the northern city of Mandalay on Wednesday.
Members of the junta’s forces turned up at the protest clad in plain clothes and travelling in civilian vehicles, according to protest organizers and local media outlets.
“They knew our plan. It was leaked. So they knew our location and came to arrest with proper plans,” a protester from the organizing committee in Mandalay, who asked not to be named, told dpa by phone.
According to local media outlet Myanmar Now, the military seized about 60 motorcycles, including from people who had not taken part in the rally.
Protesters have been marching nationwide in defiance of military rule for more than three months, ever since the elected civilian leaders were arrested and the country was thrown into political turmoil.
According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), at least 783 people have been killed and over 4,900 have been detained amid the violence.
At least 15 people were killed in clashes between the military and armed resistance fighters in the city of Tamu between Tuesday and Wednesday, Myanmar Now reported.
“The military junta is intensifying its campaign of repression against its own people in Myanmar,” the UN Human Rights Office in Geneva said on Wednesday, urging international businesses with ties to Myanmar to put pressure on the military to stop human rights violations.
“Information suggests that the military’s economic interests, including access to arms and technology, remain largely untouched and unchallenged by other states, and businesses operating in the country,” the UN said.
