Urdu Radio FM 107, formerly known as Radio Qatar Urdu Service, will relaunch its programs on June 1 with the aim to attract more young listeners.
The radio channel began with a one-hour broadcast with only two RJs in 1980 and has since grown to offer a 24-hour service with extremely popular programming. It is particularly popular among South Asian expatriates who understand and speak Urdu.
“We are quite privileged to be part of Qatar Media Corporation’s Radio Wing. This privilege comes with a bigger responsibility to shape our programs in line with the rapidly changing world of infotainment. We are not only changing with time but also working on future perspectives with a bird’s eye view to capture every market and weave it with entertaining shows and ideas. Our re-introduction is all set to go all guns blazing from June 1 with our new jingle hitting Qatar’s radio airwaves,” said Acting Director Shadab Ahmad Khan, while speaking to Qatar Tribune.
He said the FM 107 family would be expanded with the addition of new RJs. New campaigns will be launched to attract radio listeners and convert them into viewers through active social media engagement.
“We started off with an RJ hunt to tap new talent that went viral among all nationalities in Qatar. We are also building a strategy to cater to all the South Asian nationalities on all levels. Since we will be serving to strengthen businesses, we would like to provide our services to all those who need marketing assistance and be always available to upscale the creative ratio and help businesses to grow,” said Khan.
“Change is constant in life, and those who do not adapt become stagnant,” he observed.
“With this in mind, we must adapt to changing trends. As we all know, youth is the driving force behind all success. Qatar, as a young country, deserves a younger sound. This explains why we all need to change with the times in order to keep up with the new scenarios that are thrown at us,” Khan remarked.
“We, as Qatar’s first radio re-presentors, strongly believe in the same concept of running an organisation. For the past 41 years we have built a legacy and FM 107 Qatar has become the backbone of the Qatar radio fraternity, and a foundation of what has followed. Being a part of a government body has only pushed us forward stronger. We have been the most trusted radio station covering all the major events and skits over the past four decades with an approach to deliver every information with a pinch of entertainment to our loyal listeners.
“The changes include a tagline ‘Dil Se Desi’ to set the identity straight that we are indeed Qatar’s Desi Radio station which is rooted, yet modern; engagement with the Desi community and becoming a part of their everyday life; providing a platform to local talent and supporting them; providing wholesome entertainment and reliable information; keeping the cultural ethos of Qatar and of different nationalities in mind and promoting cross border friendships; new playlists to mark a statement and to segregate our drive times,” said Khan.
”Over the past few years, we have witnessed a change globally wherein the radio went from just being on air to being a social media entity as well. There is a general belief that radio available for the general public is all about playing songs, contests and RJs hitting the airwaves with their wit, but we have decided not just to break the norms but also to bring in something out of the box while strengthening our basics.
“Henceforth, we are also bringing about a change in our system to stay updated and serve our listeners with the new FM 107 which will be more youthful and joyful and will be available on air, on ground and online with equal supremacy,” asserted Khan.
