Rome Rome has promised to provide additional support to Libya to help it with migration controls, Italy’s prime minister said on Monday.
Italy is willing to finance assisted and voluntary repatriations and evacuations from Libya, Prime Minister Mario Draghi said, after talks with Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Mohammed Dbeibeh.
“I think it is a moral duty, but I think it is also in Libya’s interest to ensure respect for the rights of refugees and migrants,” Draghi said. Italy wants to continue to do its part, but the EU needs to act faster and more decisively, he said.
Migrants repeatedly risk the perilous crossing from Libya, trying to reach Europe in small, often flimsy boats, and many do not survive the journey.
Private rescue vessels have often picked up hundreds of refugees, and brought them to Europe, frequently to Italy. (dpa)
